    FranU Campus Ministry

Today our Campus Ministry volunteered at the Woman’s hospital Community Poverty Simulation. It was an educational simulation where participants played the roles of families in poverty, while volunteers filled the positions of community service workers. As a volunteer, I was guiding the participants through the simulation stations. I was assigned as a social caseworker. My role was to determine if participants were eligible for any social benefits.
It definitely was one of the most meaningful volunteer opportunity in which I participated. It brought realization and understanding of the struggle of families with low income. This exercise highlighted the difficulties faced by those in poverty to overcome their daily struggles as they try to escape and make a better life for themselves and their families. The knowledge and experience I gained during this simulation undoubtedly will help me to be a better medical provider in the future.

We served food during the Prayer Breakfast. Unfortunately, we did not have a large attendance; however, those who came enjoyed fresh donuts and prayers.

    FranU Habitat Build

It was a successful event with more students than usual. It gave us an opportunity for collaborative work. Also, I am glad Dr. Rash was able to help out working as an example for others. Great team!

The FRANU Christmas Family Extravaganza was a fantastic event that offered an opportunity for our students, staff, and their families to gather together. The children enjoyed pictures with Santa and gifts. The adults enjoyed the atmosphere of approaching Christmas.

It was a successful event! We had more people than we expected. The children and their parents had a lot of fun. I wish we had more such family-oriented events on our campus.

My husband and I built and set up a manger for The FRANU Christmas Family Extravaganza event. It always a pleasure to serve our community.

Open House Fall 2018 was a successful event. It provided an opportunity for prospective students to learn about FranU. We presented the Campus Ministry to visitors in order to show them what we do on-campus and Baton Rouge community. Hopefully, it enhanced their desire to choose FranU.

    Lake Physician Group ALS Clinic

My experience in the ALS clinic was challenging because it was my first experience in a field of medicine whose aim was not explicitly curative. Except in the unlikely eventuality of a cure, no patient in the ALS clinic will return to normal function with proper treatment. It was a difficult adjustment to see patients and their families working tirelessly to preserve residual function simply. This experience provided a challenging scenario in which to apply Catholic values about the value of all life because of the suffering and frustration experienced by patients. It also fundamentally challenged the degree of perceived control that I could exert throughout an illness. While therapy can preserve function for a time, no amount of therapy or medical skill can alter the ultimate course of ALS, which is highly unpredictable, but always terminal. My experience at the clinic gave value instructional experiences in how to internally and externally manage emotional situations in which medical knowledge itself does not grant control over the course of an illness. Although this was a valuable growth experience, I will have to think seriously about whether I would be well suited to work under this demanding set of expectations on a daily basis. Nonetheless, the lessons learned in the ALS clinic about the power of a relentlessly positive attitude toward patients and treatment are useful in any medical field.

SGA Oktoberfest was another amazing SGA event. We had great weather and tasty food. It gave us an opportunity to continue to raise awareness of Global Hunger by selling homemade boudin and playing Trivia with our students.
